ACF Initiatives


2010

• Veterinary Pet Insurance (VPI) sponsors 2st Annual East Coast K9K on April 25, 2010 to benefit the Animal Cancer Foundation. Popular WPLJ-FM radio personality Scott Shannon and his golden retriever Jimmy, a two-year survivor of osteosarcoma, joined Melissa Archer and her dog Ginger to bring visibility to the cause.

2009

• ACF Executive Director Barbara Cohen and Founder Dr. Gerald Post attend Veterinary Cancer Society Annual Conference.

• Betsy Fitzgibbon and Mary Ann Henry join the Executive Board. 2nd Annual Beau’s Walk of Courage is held in Fairfax Corners, VA.

• Veterinary Pet Insurance (VPI) sponsors 1st Annual New York City K9K on October 24, 2009 to benefit the Animal Cancer Foundation. Popular WPLJ-FM radio personality Scott Shannon and his golden retriever Jimmy, a two-year survivor of osteosarcoma, lead the walkers. ACF Executive Director Barbara Cohen and Executive Administrator Cindy Brelsford and Board Members including Anne- Marie Francis, Mary Ann Henry, David Levine, Jason Libby and Gerry Post participate in the walk.

• Jimmy is named ACF’s Animal Ambassador for 2009-2010.

• The Daily News (11/14/09) runs a feature story by Amy Sacks on Scott Shannon and Jimmy, Dr. Post, and the role of ACF in funding comparative oncology research.

• VPI sponsors 3rd Annual Long Beach, CA-K9K to benefit ACF. Dr. Post, Barbara Cohen, and Kim Williams participate in the walk.

• Zootoo.com reporter Haley Finnegan runs several “K9 in the City” webcasts covering the K9K events.

• In recognition of economic difficulties nationally and in the region, the 4th Annual Smokey’s Day is a virtual event to sponsor the “Smokey’s Day Team” in the K9K.

• ACF awards grant to Daniel Lindner, M.D., Ph.D. of the Cleveland Clinic for a study of Nitrosylcobalamin’s effect on tumors in canines.

2008

• Barbara Cohen is named new Executive Director in September. David Levine, M.D. is elected Executive Board President.

• ACF sponsors 3rd Annual Smokey’s Day, Norwalk, CT.

• Dr. Levine and Ms. Cohen travel to NCI’s research laboratories to meet with the members of the Comparative Oncology Program to learn about their mission.

• VPI holds 2nd Annual Long Beach, CA-K9K to benefit ACF. Dr. Levine And Ms. Cohen attend the walk to support VPI’s charitable efforts.

• 1st Annual Beau’s Walk of Courage is held in Fairfax Corners, VA.

2007

• ACF sponsors 2nd Annual Smokey’s Day, Norwalk, CT.

• ACF board members and executive director join more than 500 attendees at the Veterinary Cancer Society Annual Conference to learn more about current comparative oncology research.

• Veterinary Pet Insurance (VPI) holds 1st Annual Long Beach, CA-K9K to benefit ACF.

• Kim Williams, Barbara Cohen and David Levine, M.D. join the Executive Board.

2006

• Scientific American publishes feature article in December, “Cancer Clues From Pet Dogs,” focusing on how research on cancer in dogs is expanding knowledge of cancer in humans. The article details the work of Gerald P Murphy and Purdue in which ACF participated.

• Dr. Gerald Post appears on “Good Day, New York” focusing on the early warning signs, prevention and treatment of cancer.

• Dr. Post also appears on the “TODAY” show in Jill Rappaport’s feature about her dog Jack, who is a cancer survivor being treated for osteosarcoma.

• Anne-Marie Francis and Jason Libby join the Executive Board.

2004 - 2006

• ACF Board and Executive Staff participate in a strategic planning retreat to revitalize the mission, create long-range vision for research affiliation and educational initiatives.

• Samantha Schmidt relocates and is unable to continue with ACF. After a search, Charlotte Lee is named new Executive Director.

• ACF sponsors first annual Smokey’s Day, Norwalk , CT. to raise awareness of cancer in people and pets.

• Programs focus on developing awareness of the ACF through media outlets and programs.

2002
• ACF participates with the Gerald P Murphy Cancer Foundation and Purdue University in a study of the high incidence of osteosarcoma (bone cancer) in Rottweilers. The results of the study are published in the prominent medical journal, “Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention.”
2001

• ACF begins collaboration with SUGEN*, then a wholly owned subsidiary of Pharmacia, in advanced biotech research initiatives designed to benefit both pets and people.

• Samantha Schmidt is named Executive Director.

1999

• The Animal Cancer Foundation (ACF), Ruth and Sam Newman Initiative, is created. The organization is named in memory of Dr. Gerald Post’s grandparents, “two people who cherished life and whose love, compassion and understanding of all things human and animal will always be remembered.”

• ACF collaborates with The Rogosin Institute, a non-profit medical treatment and research initiative at the New York Weill (Cornell) Medical Center. On-going collaborative projects include the investigation of innovative therapies targeted at the suppression of cancer cell growth.

• One such study of macrobead therapy is currently in human clinical trial.

• Kelly Posner-Gerstenhaber, Ph.D. joins the Executive Board.

  1990s
• The Orentreich Foundation for the Advancement of Science, Inc. (OFAS) assists Dr. Gerald Post by establishing a fund for those who wish to make donations intended for research to benefit animals battling cancer. Dr. Norman Orentreich, founder of OFAS, lends his invaluable vision and support to the creation of the Animal Cancer Foundation.
