Raise More Than $14,000 for Animal Cancer Foundation

Port Washington News ArticlePort Washington residents Barbara Cohen, executive director of the Animal Cancer Foundation (ACF), and David Levine, M.D., board president, joined more than 500 people and their pets to observe Pet Cancer Awareness Month this November by walking in New York and California to raise funds. The bicoastal VPI K9K Pet Cancer Awareness Walks, organized by Veterinary Pet Insurance Co. ( VPI), brought in more than $14,000 for ACF, a nonprofit organization that supports comparative oncology research to advance the prevention and treatment of cancer in people and pets. The walks bring public attention to the prevalence of pet cancer in the United States, which some experts estimate to affect 60 percent of dogs and cats during their lifetimes.

The New York K9K took place on Oct. 24 and featured a four-kilometer walk across the Brooklyn Bridge. WPLJ-FM radio's popular morning show host, Scott Shannon acted as Master of Ceremonies and was accompanied by his beloved Golden Retriever, Jimmy, who was named ACF's Animal Ambassador. Jimmy, a two-year survivor of osteosarcoma (bone cancer), exemplifies the progress being made in treating animal cancer. "By participating with a corporate sponsor like VPI and through the support of local New York radio station WPLJ-FM, ACF has seen donations steadily increase," said Barbara Cohen, ACF executive director. "The funds raised through the VPI K9K Pet Cancer Awareness Walks have a great impact on our ability to support research to benefit pets like Jimmy and his human companions, too." ACF's own "Smokey's Day Team" included ACF Founder Gerald Post, DVM a veterinary oncologist in practice in Norwalk, CT, and Westbury, NY. Several residents of Port Washington 'joined Ms. Cohen, Dr. Levine and Dr. Post ori the walk, including Mark; Pat and Sophie Lampl with poodle Kerry, Mark, 'Kathy, Peter and Aimee Levinson with Tibetan Terrier Nula, Keli and Amanda Levine with Golden Retriever Ollie, and Gary and Anna Cohen with Golden Retriever Belle.

A second annual NYC walk is being planned for spring 2010.
