Our Work

Uniting Pet & Human Research for a Cure®

Cancer is a disease that affects all of us—pets and people alike. Every year, millions of dogs and cats are diagnosed with cancer, just as 1 in 2 men and 1 in 3 women will face a cancer diagnosis in their lifetime. Despite medical advancements, funding gaps in comparative oncology continue to slow the progress of life-saving treatments.

Driving Breakthroughs Through Comparative Oncology

Since 1999, ACF has been the leading funder of comparative oncology research, supporting groundbreaking studies that accelerate discoveries for both pets and people.

The Canine Cancer Genome Project (CCGP)

Sponsored by Blue Buffalo Foundation and Animal Cancer Foundation, CCGP is a multi-institutional initiative led by TGen, Ethos Discovery, Tufts University, and CHOP. This pioneering effort focuses on genomic and proteomic profiling of three critical canine cancers:

  • Osteosarcoma
  • B-cell lymphoma
  • Soft tissue sarcoma

These cancers have limited genomic data making them prime candidates for deeper study. By mapping their genetic mutations and placing the datasets in the public domain, CCGP enables researchers to identify targeted treatments and develop personalized medicine for both dogs and humans. This research not only improves cancer care for pets but also advances human oncology, offering new hope for patients battling similar diseases.

ACF Comparative Oncology Grant Awards

ACF provides early-stage funding to researchers whose work shows promise in delivering near-term benefits for pets with cancer while advancing human cancer treatment. These one-to-two-year grants focus on establishing proof-of-concept, allowing scientists to attract additional funding and scale their research. Prior grant recipients have contributed to major advancements in cancer therapies, helping to bridge the gap between veterinary and human oncology.
