Meet Augustus, affectionately known as Gus, a remarkable French bulldog who is living his best life despite the odds. Gus, who turned 13 years old in May, came into Angelica’s when she was just 20. Despite being a college student with limited resources and a part-time job, Angelica was able to bring Gus home thanks to the kindness of the shop owner, who let her make weekly payments until he was fully paid for. They’ve been inseparable ever since.
In September 2023, Gus was diagnosed with a cancerous mass on his kidney. Angelica started a GoFundMe page and found a surgeon to perform a full nephrectomy, during which Gus’s entire kidney was removed. During the surgery, more cancer was discovered in his lower intestine, and he was given a prognosis of 3 to 6 months. Yet here they are, celebrating month 18.
Angelica decided against chemotherapy or radiation due to the immense stress it would cause Gus. His surgery had already taken a mental toll on him, and she couldn’t bear to see him suffer further. Gus thrives on their bond and struggles with confusion and separation from Angelica. His inquisitive nature and need to be close to her are what keep him going.
Gus’s story is a testament to resilience, love, and the incredible bond they share. Despite his health challenges, he continues to bring joy and inspiration to Angelica’s life. Together, they face each day with hope and gratitude, cherishing every moment they have.
To honor Gus’s incredible journey, Angelica, Assistant Winemaker at Fox Run Vineyards, created a special edition Piquette in Gus’s name. Fox Run Vineyards has donated $1 from every bottle sold to Animal Cancer Foundation, helping fund comparative oncology research.
“No one prepares you for the inevitable heartbreak that comes with being a dog parent when you’re 20 years old. Gus has not only been my companion but a source of comfort and joy for so many others—he makes me so genuinely proud to be his mom. This donation is my hope that his impact will extend far beyond the time I have left with him on this earth. I know losing him will be one of the hardest things I’ll ever face—but right now, I’m just so thankful he’s still here, chasing his tennis ball, still Gus. Shout out to Scott and Ruth Osborne for allowing me to choose Animal cancer Foundation and making this donation in Gus’s name. You’re the greatest.” – Angelica Lawler
